Crazy! Just, crazy! I can't believe it's been two years since my last blog. We've only added one more School in that time. We now provide holiday clinics for The Illawarra Grammar School Junior School during April, July and September. I have had "conversations" with other Schools, including Wollondilly Anglican, or to be precise, the Chaplain, that was based at the School's church, and, Santa Sabina in Strathfield. Both opportunities for one reason or another didn't come into fruition. I was pretty gutted! Establishing this business is harder than I first thought. Naively, I thought I would fulfil a need in the community, come riding in like a Knight in Shining Armour on his trusty steed, and solve the obvious problem that our community has - getting it's children active!

My Prices were extremely fair, in fact my share of the profits after paying the specialist coaches was only 20% of the overall fee. As a result, for each individual child, in some cases I was only making $10 per child. Considering the amount of time to complete coach's lists, collate medical forms, ensure venues were appropriate and act as first aid officer for the complete camps - approx. 20 hours of my time; I am only walking away with a couple of hundred in my pocket - I have to be crazy!

I'm teaching casually to keep the hounds at bay! and time keeps marching on......

This wasn't what it was supposed to be like!

it sounds awesome that I can honestly say that I have doubled my clientele in 4 years, but let's break that down; let's put that in a different perspective - I've now got two Schools, not one. Crazy!

If this is the growth rate of all small businesses, I can understand why so many go 'belly up'! It's like 'Rocky' fighting Apollo Creed - how many times do I need to get knocked down before I stay down, I can hear Mickey's rough, scratchy scrawl "Stay down Kid, stay down!" Crazy!....

Then, I hear of businesses that are just starting out and they are booming - profits through the glass roof! I sometimes get green with envy and jealousy. Why not me? What am I doing wrong? Along comes the self evaluation and criticism - you could do more! Get the business name out there! Pound that Pavement!

But in the end, true reflection comes in the form of this one question:

WHY? Why am I doing this? Why did I start this business in particular? Is it for the monetary gain? (If there is any!) WHY?....

I can answer the question simply by looking at my life long vocation - I'm a teacher, so I teach. I love sport, so I play/coach. I love helping kids, so I teach and coach kids! That's the reason why, not for monetary gain, for the gratefulness that a kid displays when they learn a new skill at a game they love! That disbelieving look when they achieve a skill or outcome when they knew they couldn't do it! That's why I do it! So CRAZY? Yes, absolutely, but in a good way. Crazy about helping kids achieve their dreams!

Proverbs 16:3 says "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." so I will try to keep committing this business to Him. I will remain committed to help kids grow to love a sport, any sport, and to achieve their goals and dreams, because if I do, I will achieve mine.... CRAZY!
